Buying a home in Port St Lucie Florida is exciting. After all the dreaming and hoping, planning and prepping, you are… home. And on the Sunshine State’s famed Treasure Coast at that! As exhilarating as this time is, it is also stressful. The hassle of packing, moving, unpacking, discovering you can’t find your favorite immersion blender, or that your blinds won’t fit your new windows adds a bit of tension and pressure into the mix. Our advice: relax and breathe. Ok, good. The next step: figuring out what you need for your new home.

Start with the Basics

No matter the style, the size, or the neighborhood, all new homes in Port St. Lucie require the same essentials. Having these in place will increase your peace of mind, comfort, and convenience:

  • Homeowner’s insurance.
  • Flood Insurance (remember, flood coverage is not included under your regular homeowner’s policy. Because of the location and potential for severe weather, you need to protect yourself, your home, and your belongings).
  • Umbrella insurance. This is insurance that protects you against losses that are not covered by other policies. Ask your agent for details.
  • Utilities. Make sure your water, gas/oil, sewer, electricity, and internet are up and running. All it takes is a few phone calls, and your comfortable, functional home will be ready and waiting for you.
  • Cleaning supplies. Sure, it’s not as fun to buy dish soap and toilet bowl cleaner as it is to pick out new artwork or bedding, but they’re essential! While your new home will be in excellent condition, you may want to freshen it up as you move in and out with boxes and furniture, and after you’ve unpacked. And, of course, you’ll need them regularly!
  • Safety items, such as fire extinguishers (if not present and new), new door locks, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (if not present), extension cords, surge protectors, flashlight/batteries, etc.
  • Medical and first aid items. Stock up on the must-haves, including pain relievers, fever reducers, antacids, bandages, antiseptic products, etc.

Next, we recommend going room by room and making a list of what you need (and what you want):

Kitchen/Dining Room

  • Table
  • Chairs
  • Pots, pans, and other cookware
  • Silverware
  • Cooking utensils and knives
  • Dishware
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Potholders
  • Dishtowels
  • Sponges and dish soap
  • Trash can with lid
  • Small appliances (coffee maker, blender, can opener, toaster, microwave, etc.)
  • The definitely-forgot-about items (plastic wrap, paper towels, napkins, aluminum foil, food storage containers, Ziploc bags, etc.)
  • Take-out menus from local restaurants (Hey, you still have to eat, even when your cookware and dishes are still packed uptight!)
  • Staples (flour, sugar, coffee, tea, ketchup, mustard, mayo, olive/vegetable oil, etc.)

Living Room/Common Areas

  • Seating (couches, chairs)
  • Window treatments
  • Lighting, such as lamps – and light bulbs!
  • Coffee table
  • End tables (if desired)
  • Shelving (if not present)
  • Throws and pillows
  • Television (if desired)
  • Artwork and decor

Bedrooms

  • Bed frames
  • Mattresses (and box springs, if required)
  • Bedding
  • Pillows
  • Window treatments
  • Bedside tables
  • Lamps
  • Mirrors
  • Clothes hangers
  • Dressers
  • Window treatments
  • Artwork and decor

Bathrooms

  • Towels
  • Hand towels and washcloths
  • Shower curtain
  • Bath mat
  • Toilet brush
  • Plunger
  • Toilet paper
  • Handsoap
  • Shower/bath products (body wash, shampoo, conditioner, razors, etc.)
  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toothbrush holder
  • Trash can
  • Bathroom cleaning products
  • Cubby shelf for storage (if you do not have a linen closet)
  • Hamper for laundry (these could also be in bedroom closets, the utility room, or wherever is most convenient – but you’ll definitely need them!)

Entryway/Mudroom

Don’t forget your entryway. You’ll need some practical items here as well:

  • Coat rack or hooks
  • Boot and shoe racks
  • Shoe tray
  • Floor mat/welcome mat
  • Key hooks
  • Mail organizer
  • Laundry hamper (this is another great place to put a hamper. When household members come in covered in mud or dirt, they can throw dirty items right in)

These include:

  • Washer
  • Dryer
  • Water heater

When you choose Synergy Homes, these appliances will be in place, waiting for use. Further, they are Energy Star rated, so you can start saving money as soon as you move in.
