Many people choose to call the state of Florida home for a variety of reasons. With more than 200 days of sunshine each year, a warm climate throughout the seasons, and plenty of sandy beaches that are never more than an hour away, Florida is the ideal state for many people. It’s a big state, though, and choosing the right city as you think about moving here is key to making sure you’re happy with your experience. Where are the best places to live in Florida, and which cities should you consider as you make your move? Consider these top five options.
1. Port St. Lucie:
Along the Atlantic coast in Southern Florida, you’ll find this beautiful city. With just 189,396 residents, it’s only the 8th largest city in the state. It sits 50 miles north of the famed West Palm Beach and about halfway between the much larger cities of Miami and Orlando. Occupying 120 square miles, the city was initially designed for farming and fishing, but it’s grown well beyond its historical purpose. Today, it hosts a number of top employers, including Indian River State College, Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, and Teleperformance. The median home price in the city is $209,000. There’s so much to do here, too. The New York Mets hold spring training in the city, there are more than 40 parks and recreational facilities around the city, and the river offers excellent fishing and boating options. It’s also close to the biggest attractions in the state.
2. West Palm Beach:
This is a big place, and you’re sure to find a space that fits your lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for a country club-type neighborhood or something that makes sense for young professionals, you’re going to find it in this city. It’s growing fast, and the unemployment rate here is much lower than the national average. The small business scene is incredible, and if you’re looking for entrepreneurship opportunities, they’re scattered across every corner of this city. The major industries here are primarily tourism-focused, but there are also a number of jobs in the medical industry here and technology options, too. Some of the top employers in this city include Microsoft, Royal Caribbean, and American Sugar Refining. The real estate market is hot, and properties go for a wide range of prices. Whether you’re looking for an ultra-luxury property or something a bit smaller, you’re certain to find it here. The median listing price is $250,000. However, keep in mind that the number of homes available continues to decline as many more people discover this area. There’s much to do in this area, too. Golf courses abound, as do fishing opportunities, plays, and shopping options. There’s a fairly intense art scene here too, which may give this city the diversity you’ll want to consider.
3. Loxahatchee:
While not as big as many of the places on this list, this is easily one of the best options in Florida if you appreciate the beach and everything it has to offer. The population here is just 3,424, and its proximity to the peninsula’s southern tip means you have instant access to the beach at any point in time. The cost of living is a bit higher here, as is the median home price, but the natural beauty of the area and small-town feel are both real draws for many potential residents.
4. Destin:
Located 40 miles east of Pensacola, Destin is an excellent destination for people who want to move to Florida. The city has a population of 13,421 people and a low unemployment rate. The median home price in the city is $376,300. A vibrant economy helps attract many to Destin, and if you’re looking for a great place to raise a family, this is certainly it. The schools here routinely get A+ ratings from the state, and there are lots of activities available across the community for kids. This city offers a vibrant and urban feel that’s ideal for young professionals just getting ready to start a family. Perhaps the best part, though, is the proximity to the beach. In Destin, you’re never more than a short car ride from the shore!
5. Oviedo:
A suburb of Orlando, there are a number of great housing options in this area. Just thirteen different neighborhoods make up this small community, and the population here is only 38,550. The average home price is just $223,900. Are you looking to raise a family? The schools here are excellent, and given that it’s just thirty minutes from Orlando, you’re sure to have a fairly short commute if you work in the city. There’s plenty to do here, too. Enjoy Little Big Econ State Forest, everything Lek Jesup has to offer, and lots of local events like concerts.
